NEW POLL FINDS VICTORIANS DIVIDED ON COLLINGWOOD AHEAD OF 2025 AFL GRAND FINAL - AFL STEREOTYPES TESTED
Ahead of the 2025 AFL Grand Final, a new poll of 1,000 Victorians conducted by Fox & Hedgehog, published in the Herald Sun reveals Collingwood is the state’s most divisive club.
Almost a quarter of Victorians want to see the Magpies win the premiership this year, more than any other team. But by a bigger margin, even more Victorians say they’d least like Collingwood to win.
AFL STEREOTYPES TESTED – AND BUSTED
The survey also dug into the stereotypes Victorians hold about AFL fans. Collingwood fans were most often thought to have missing teeth, rock mullets, complain about umpires, and be “bogans.” Reality says otherwise:
Teeth: Collingwood fans actually have better dental hygiene than average, Carlton fans top the “missing teeth” chart.
Mullets: Bulldogs and Tigers fans are the real mullet-wearers, not Collingwood.
Umpires: Collingwood fans really do complain about the umpires more than most, but North Melbourne fans are the most aggrieved at perceived injustice.
Bogans: Collingwood is seen as the bogan capital of the AFL, but Hawthorn fans are most likely to proudly self-identify that way.
Melbourne fans also received the sharp end of the stereotype stick, being perceived as an elitist club. Melbourne fans partly live up to their stereotype, two in five really did go to private school, and Victorians see them as most likely to never watch a game from outside the MCC.
THE BOGAN-ELITE CONTINUUM
Victorians map AFL supporter bases onto a “bogan-elite” scale: Collingwood fans on one end, Melbourne fans on the other, with every other club somewhere in between.
It’s a cultural divide that makes the AFL as much about identity as sport.
