Immigration Poll - Institute of Public Affairs

Fox & Hedgehog conducted research for the Institute of Public Affairs, covering public attitudes to Australia’s current migration intake.

This research, published on 19 March 2026 across multiple media outlets, including The Daily Telegraph, News.com.au, The Nightly, The Daily Mail, and Sky News found that the majority of Australians support reductions to Australia’s current migration intake.

Key findings from the research include:

  • 79% of Australians want an annual migration intake of 100,000 or less (compared with average annual NOM under the Albanese government of 424,357.)

    • This includes 75% of first generation migrants; 74% of non-citizens; and 72% of those aged 18-24.

    • This also includes 73% of Labor voters, and 67% of Greens voters.

  • 60% of Australians say there are too many migrants in Australia, while only 17% think there are too few.

    • This includes 59% of first-generation migrants.

  • 54% of Australians say they no longer recognise the country they grew up in.

    • This includes 86% of One Nation voters, 57% of Coalition voters, and 37% of both Labor and Greens voters.

The representative survey of 1,936 Australian citizens and visa holders was conducted between 24 and 27 February 2026. The margin of error was 2.7%.
